About DMV Ready

DMV Ready is a free practice-test app for the U.S. driver’s permit exam. We cover all 50 states and Washington, D.C. with state-specific question banks, the same number of questions and the same passing score as your real DMV test, and zero ads. Built for one job: getting you your permit on the first try.

Why we built it

Most permit-test apps treat all 50 states the same - a generic 25-question template, an “80% to pass” bar, and a topic mix that doesn’t match what your state actually tests. That’s not how the DMV works. Pennsylvania gives you 18 questions at 83% to pass. New Jersey gives you 50 at 80%. Maryland holds you to 88% - the strictest passing bar in the country.

If you study to a generic format and then sit down to a state-specific test, you’ve been training for the wrong exam. We started DMV Ready to fix that. Every practice run mirrors your state’s real exam: same length, same passing score, same topic distribution. What you study is what you’ll see at the DMV.

What’s in the app

  • 3,960 practice questions - 1,999 universal questions plus 1,961 state-specific questions covering rules unique to each jurisdiction.
  • 1,701 study cards across 14 topic categories - Traffic Signs, Right of Way, Speed Limits, Parking Rules, Defensive Driving, and the rest.
  • 51 jurisdictions with their real exam configurations baked in - question count, passing score, and minimum age all match your state’s DMV handbook.
  • A traffic-sign reference library with comprehensive MUTCD coverage, organized by sign shape and category. Useful inside the app and as a study tool on its own.
  • Memory tips on every question - a one-line mnemonic that shows up after you answer, so you remember the rule, not just the option you picked.
  • An honest readiness score calibrated to your state’s actual passing bar, not a generic 80%. We won’t tell you you’re ready after 18 questions on a 4,000-question bank.

Who it’s for

Three groups of people use DMV Ready every day. High-school students prepping for a first license, with a test date in mind and a 20-minute commute to study during. Adults relocating to a new state - moving from California to New York, or arriving from another country - who need to pass a written test in rules they don’t intuit yet. And older drivers reactivating a lapsed license, who didn’t expect to be back at the DMV and want a calm, no-frills tool that respects their time.

What unites all three: high stakes, no patience for cluttered apps, and a practical need to not waste study hours on the wrong material.

How it’s different from other practice apps

  • State-specific exam parity. Your practice exam matches your state’s real format. Most competitors don’t do this; we built the whole app around it.
  • An honest readiness score. The Readiness Predictor uses your accuracy across categories to estimate whether you’d pass today - and it’s calibrated to your state’s actual passing bar, not a generic 80%.
  • A focused mistake-review loop. Every question you miss is saved and surfaced for re-drill, with the underlying rule attached so you fix the gap, not just the answer.
  • No ads, anywhere. Free or premium, you never see an ad mid-quiz, mid-page, or anywhere else. We don’t sell your attention while you’re trying to study.
  • No fake intimacy or hype. The app talks to you like a competent adult who needs information. No daily streak guilt-trips, no “crush your test” motivational copy.

Free vs Premium

The app is free to download. The free tier covers everything most people need to walk into the DMV prepared: 30 questions a day in topic mode, one full practice exam a day (up to three total free exams ever), 5 mistake-review drills a day, the entire study-card library, the sign reference, and the sign quiz. No ads, no signup, no email harvesting.

Premium unlocks unlimited daily exams, the AI Hub features (Quick Practice, Readiness Predictor, Study Plan, Sign Scanner), and tickets 6 through end of your state’s practice ticket set. Both Premium plans grant identical access - pick whichever billing you prefer. All purchases run through Apple’s App Store.
