Setting up a MyDMV account takes about 5 minutes. You need a California driver license number or ID card number, the last four digits of your Social Security Number, and a valid email address. Here is the step-by-step:
- Open dmv.ca.gov/portal/customer-service/mydmv and click Create Account.
- Enter your full legal name, date of birth, and email address. The name must match your driver license, ID card, or vehicle registration exactly.
- Enter your California driver license number (DL/ID) or vehicle plate number. If you do not have either, the system creates a guest account with limited features.
- Create a password (8 to 16 characters, at least one uppercase, one lowercase, and one number).
- Verify your email by clicking the confirmation link California DMV sends within 5 to 10 minutes. If you do not see it, check spam.
- Sign in. The first sign-in walks you through a 2-factor authentication setup with your phone number.
