Yield Sign Rules for the Permit Test

A yield sign orders you to surrender the right of way. It doesn’t order you to stop. The federal standard behind the sign, Section 2B.08 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, tells drivers to slow to a speed that fits current conditions and to stop only when stopping keeps them from interfering with traffic that already holds the right of way. That single sentence settles most permit test questions about the sign. Below we walk through the exact federal wording, the legal test an officer actually applies, the roundabout and railroad rules almost every explainer skips, and the pavement markings that travel with the sign.

The yield sign turned out to be one of the few devices where nearly every state repeats the federal language almost verbatim, which lets you learn it once and apply it everywhere. Section 2B.08 sets the design: the YIELD (R1-2) sign “shall be a downward-pointing equilateral triangle with a wide red border and the legend YIELD in red on a white background.”

The same section sets the duty. Vehicles controlled by a yield sign “need to slow down to a speed that is reasonable for the existing conditions or stop when necessary to avoid interfering with conflicting traffic.” Read that twice. Stopping stays conditional. A driver who eases through a yield sign at 10 mph with an empty cross street has complied fully. A driver who comes to a complete stop and then pulls out 40 feet in front of an oncoming car has not complied at all, despite the stop.

The legal test is not whether you stopped

State vehicle codes frame the duty as a hazard test, never a stopping test. California Vehicle Code Section 21803 requires a driver at a yield sign to yield the right of way to vehicles that have entered the intersection or are “approaching on the intersecting highway close enough to constitute an immediate hazard.” The word stop appears nowhere in the section.

Illinois pushes further, and this piece we’ve never once seen in a yield sign explainer. Under 625 ILCS 5/11-904(d), if a driver “is involved in a collision at an intersection or interferes with the movement of other vehicles after driving past a stop or yield right-of-way sign, such collision or interference shall be deemed prima facie evidence of the driver’s failure to yield right-of-way.” Two consequences fall out of that clause. A crash just past a yield sign gets pinned on you before anyone measures a skid mark. And no crash needs to happen. Interference alone carries the same presumption.

Interference carries a plain meaning here. Another driver braked, swerved, or lifted off the accelerator because of you. No contact, no damage, no insurance claim, and still a citable violation with the burden already shifted onto you.

The common mistake. Picture a driver merging onto a four-lane arterial in Sacramento from a channelized right-turn lane that carries a yield sign. Traffic looks light, so they hold their speed and slot in. The driver in the through lane taps the brakes to open a gap. Nobody touches, nobody calls anyone, and they drive away certain they did nothing wrong because they never needed to stop.

In Illinois that brake tap becomes prima facie evidence against them. Under California’s wording it counts as the immediate hazard they failed to yield to. Watching where users drop points on our right-of-way at intersections material, this framing flips the answer from wrong to right.

Where the manual requires a yield sign, and where it forbids one

Section 2B.09 of the federal manual reads as a short list of options plus two hard prohibitions, and the prohibitions carry the interesting part. Yield signs may go up on approaches to a through street where a full stop isn’t always required, at the second crossroad of a divided highway when the median at the intersection measures 30 feet or more, for a channelized turn lane separated from adjacent lanes by an island, and facing an entering roadway on a merge where sight distance or acceleration geometry falls short.

Then the standard clamps down. A yield sign “shall be used to assign right-of-way at the entrance to a roundabout,” and yield signs at roundabouts “shall not be used to control the circulatory roadway.” Outside of roundabouts, yield signs “shall not be placed on all of the approaches to an intersection.”

That last rule hands you a free diagnostic that no study guide bothers to flag. If you spot a yield sign facing every leg of an intersection, the intersection qualifies as a roundabout by federal definition, since that’s the only place the manual permits the arrangement. An all-way yield stays otherwise prohibited, which also explains why nothing equivalent to the ALL WAY plaque exists for yield signs. The railroad crossing rule most guides skip

Ask most drivers which sign controls a railroad crossing without flashing lights and gates, and they’ll name the crossbuck. The crossbuck covers only half the assembly. Section 8B.04 of the manual states that “a YIELD sign shall be the default traffic control device for Crossbuck Assemblies on all highway approaches to passive grade crossings unless an engineering study performed by the regulatory agency or highway authority having jurisdiction over the roadway approach determines that a STOP sign is appropriate.”

Default carries weight in a document that separates standards from guidance. Every passive crossing in the country, meaning every crossing without active warning devices, must carry a yield sign or a stop sign next to its crossbuck, and the yield sign wins as the presumed choice. Guidance in the same section limits stop signs to “unusual conditions where requiring all highway vehicles to make a full stop is deemed essential by an engineering study.”

Practically, this means a yield sign at a rural crossing isn’t decoration and isn’t a local quirk. It stands as the federal default, and it converts the crossing into a genuine yield. Approach at a speed that lets you stop, look both ways down the track, and stop if a train sits close enough to matter. Shark teeth: the yield line and the sizes nobody quizzes you on

Yield signs carry their own pavement marking, and it isn’t a stop line. Section 3B.16 specifies that yield lines “shall consist of a row of solid white isosceles triangles pointing toward approaching vehicles.” Drivers call them shark teeth. Each triangle should have a base of 12 to 24 inches and a height equal to 1.5 times the base, with 3 to 12 inches of space between them.

The same section bars the wrong marking outright: stop lines “shall not be used at locations where drivers are required to yield,” with passive grade crossings written in as the exception. So a solid white bar across a yield-controlled approach counts as a defect, except at a railroad crossing where the manual allows it. Placement carries bounds too: 4 feet minimum ahead of the nearest crosswalk line, and never more than 30 feet or less than 4 feet from the edge of the intersecting traveled way. California’s handbook describes the same marking in plainer terms, calling it a line of solid white triangles that “point towards approaching vehicles” to show where to yield or stop, per Section 7 of the California Driver Handbook.

Sizes surprise people. A yield sign runs physically larger than the stop sign at the same kind of intersection, since a triangle needs more area to carry the same legibility.

Roundabouts, where the yield question actually goes wrong

Roundabouts stand as the one place the manual makes a yield sign mandatory, and they’re also where drivers misread the duty. Entering traffic yields to traffic already circulating, movement runs counter-clockwise around the central island, and the yield applies to every lane you’re about to cross. On a two-lane entry that covers both circulating lanes, not just the near one.

Confusion here shows up in data rather than anecdote. In surveys collected by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 40 percent of drivers said signs and markings didn’t make clear what speed to drive or which lane holds the right of way when exiting. The safety payoff shows up in data too. Intersections converted from signals or stop signs to roundabouts show injury crash reductions of 72 to 80 percent and total crash reductions of 35 to 47 percent, and IIHS estimates that converting just 10 percent of US signalized intersections would have prevented more than 50,000 crashes in 2024, including 289 fatal ones.

Urban entry speeds get held to roughly 15 to 20 mph by the geometry, which lands right on the speed the yield standard contemplates. California’s handbook words the entry duty the same way the federal manual does. Slow on approach, yield to all traffic already in the roundabout, enter when the gap runs genuinely large enough, and signal before exiting. Nothing in that sequence requires a stop, and nothing in it permits rolling in front of a circulating car.

How yield shows up on the permit test
